How Old You Feel Has a Real Impact on You

If someone asked you the question “How old do you feel?”, how would you answer it? Would you say 40, 50 60 or 70?

It turns out that this subjective age that you are saying has a powerful impact according to Antonio Terracciano, a professor of geriatrics at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee.

Scientists are finding that people who feel younger than their chronological age are typically healthier and more psychologically resilient than those who fee older.

A study published from South Korea did brain scans on 68 healthy older adults and found that those who felt younger than their age had thicker brain matter and had experienced less age-related deterioration. They also found that people who feel older than their chronological age were more at risk for hospitalization, dementia and death.

So…let me ask it again – “How old do you feel?” Before you answer, keep in mind from all the other research that I’ve done and read that you can change your mind and change your outcome. For me, I’d say mid-40s, so how about you?

Fight Alzheimer’s Disease With Niacinamide

There’s a way to fight back against Alzheimer’s disease by using the nutritional supplement niacinamide. In a study done with mice, the researchers gave them niacinamide which is a type of vitamin B3. They found that it did several things. It reduced one marker of Alzheimer’s disease call “tau protein” by 60%.

It also increased microtubules that carry information to the inside of brain cells. The researchers believe this is allowing more information to get into the cells.

Not only did it bring the mice back to the level where they were before the deterioration, it actually improved the behavior in normal mice.  One of the researchers said that the mice were cured!

Since niacinamide has been used extensively and safely for over 60 year, using it on humans should cause minimal problems. While a few people have reported nausea, cutting the dose in half seemed to stop the nausea.  There was even a book about using niacinamide written in 1943 by Dr. William Kaufman called The Common Form of Niacin Amide Deficiency Disease: Aniacinamidosis.

The recommended dose if 1,000 mg of niacinamide three times a day. You should see symptoms starting to improve in three to four weeks and after three to four months most symptoms will have disappeared.
One note of caution, stopping taking niacinamide would lead to a return of all symptoms within 3 to 4 months.  So…niacinamide three times a day or having Alzheimer’s, which direction should I go? I think the answer is obvious!

The Amazing Communication Between Trees

There a fascinating article in Discover Magazine, December 2019, on how trees communicate. Researchers have gone into the redwood forests in California. A redwood starts as a seed that is only 1/8 of an inch across and grows more than 30 stories high and weights around 6000 tons. Under the trees in the soil is a complex network of fungal strands which allow elder trees to communicate with sapling trees.

The older trees will send through this fungal network the carbon that the saplings need to grow. They’ll prompt the young saplings to activate useful genes that, for example, might heighten the saplings resistance to drought.

The trees are actually able to tell which saplings are their relatives. This might trigger the elder tree to scale back their own root structure to give these saplings more room to grow. An elder tree that is sick or dying will even send extra doses of its own carbon to the young relatives and even simulate defense mechanisms in the saplings.

These saplings that are well connected to their relatives will survive at a rate 3 to 4 times that of a less connected sapling. So…when you walk in a forest there may be a lot more going on than you ever thought.

A Class of Common Drugs May Cause Dementia

Dementia is a word that sends shivers down older folk’s spines. It’s something we all want to avoid as we get older. Well, there’s a long list of Over The Counter Drugs that many people take that can have a devastating effect on memory. These drugs include popular products that are taken for allergies, colds, flu, motion sickness and insomnia and some of the brand name products include Benadryl, Sominex. Allermax, and PM (nighttime) version of Excedrin, Advil Tylenol and Aleve.

So, what do all these drugs have in common that they can cause memory loss in older people? All these drugs affect a neurotransmitter in the brain called Acetylcholine which is produced in nerve cells throughout the body and brain. Acetylcholine does such things as regulating heartbeat, blood pressure and blood flow. In the brain, it’s involved with memory, learning and alertness.

All the drugs I listed above are know as anticholinergics and they are meant to control cardiac arrhythmias, open airways and sinuses among many other applications by reducing acetylcholine production in the body.

The problem with these drugs is the side effects. In a study by British researchers, they compared these medications in 58,769 patients with dementia with a control group of 225,574 people who had normal cognitive function. They found that if a person has had more than 1,095 doses of these drugs within a 10-year period that their likelihood of getting dementia increased by 50 percent. A person could reach this level if they were taking the minimum effective dose of one of these anticholinergic drugs daily for three years!

So…if you are taking the drugs in the list above, you might want to reduce what you’re taking and explore alternative therapies from acupuncture, meditation, essential oils, nutritional therapies, massage and other healing modalities to help you, at a minimum, to control your level of pain while reducing the possibility of your getting dementia.

The Power of Inflammation and a Hip Surgery Update

                            Hip Surgery Recovery Update

It’s now been 2 weeks since I had my hip replacement surgery. The medical folks are still amazed by my rapid recovery. My pain level has stayed around ZERO to maybe a couple of times it was ½ to a 1. In talking to Heather, my Home Care Physical Therapist, she described me as a high-performance patient.

I asked Heather on a 1 to 10 scale with 1 being a great healing and 10 being Uh-oh how she would rate my recovery. She said if I didn’t have some swelling and bruising in the lower leg, she would rate my recovery at 1. She’s only had one other patient be a 1 and he was a younger guy!
I’ve also continued to play Steven Halpern’s subliminal recording called Accelerated Self-Healing when I meditate twice a date.

I’m now walking a half mile in around 14 minutes, twice a day and am riding my stationary bike for around 15 minutes per day. I elevate my legs above my head 2 to 3 times a day after exercising and apply ice when I’m in that position.

It’s fun to be able to beat the expectations of the medical staff!

                         The Negative Power of Inflammation

You can get a low-grade inflammation from having a mild fever to having a creaky joint to having tooth decay. While there are usually not many symptoms when it’s a low-level inflammation, inflammation is having an outsized influence on how we are affected by illnesses and diseases. Inflammation can affect our entire body. As an example, cardiologists in Boston reported on a clinical trial with 10,000 patients in 39 countries with a mean age of 61.

The initial aim of the study was to see if an anti-inflammatory drug called canakinumab could lower rates of heart disease. The researchers found that the drug was protective against heart disease. Surprisingly, the researchers also found that the drug could protect against lung cancer deaths by reducing them around 77%. IT also caused gout and arthritis levels to fall.

Here’s a list of herbs that can help you reduce or prevent inflammation in your body in case you’d like to avoid the drug route.

Turmeric (Curcumin) ...
Green Tea. ...
White Willow Bark. ...
Maritime Pine Bark (Pycnogenol) ...
Chili Peppers (Capsaicin) ...
Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) ...
Black Pepper. ...
Resveratrol

So, take charge of reducing your inflammation as the benefits can be great!

Cranberries May Hold The Answer For Fighting Super Bugs

Since it's almost the holiday season and the time for cranberries in all
its forms, let's look at the power it has to protect us from super bugs.

Some strains of E. coli can cause diarrhea and can be transmitted
through food, water or contact with animals and people. With the rise
of super bugs, diarrhea that they can cause can become deadly.

For bacteria to actually cause an infection, the bacteria must first adhere
to a surface in the host such as the stomach lining. The bacteria multiply
and produce enough additional bacteria to be able to form what's called
a biofilm. If you can stop the formation of the biofilm, then there is no infection.

Enter…… cranberry juice! Researchers at the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth found that chemicals in cranberry juice
interfere with the adhesion of the bacteria to form its biofilm by
several methods.

One is some of the cranberry juice chemicals compress tiny tendrils on the
surface of the E. Coli bacteria so that it can’t bind to the lining of the
urinary tract.

The second way involves different chemicals in the juice that greatly
reduce the ability of the bacteria to stick to a surface. So…since we are
running out of antibiotics to fight off these super bugs and since we're
going to be eating a lot of cranberry products, it’s good to known that
you're helping your body to stay health.

Alternatives Are Becoming Mainstream

I was recently reading a magazine and read an ad for Blue Cross’s Medicare policy. The ad was talking about a woman who had retired and was enjoying life by traveling and doing lots of activities including Kayaking.

She started to experience carpal tunnel syndrome and thought it would curtail her enjoying her retirement.

The ad then starts to talk about the treatments that she started, and I was expecting it to talk about drugs. Wow, was I wrong!

The first thing it says is she got acupuncture. That’s right, Blue Cross is saying she had acupuncture!!!! Plus, she did a few other things that the ad didn’t specify, and that cured her problem. So, she was back to enjoying her retirement.

Another example is I’m personally going to be having hip replacement surgery on November 21 and the pre-surgery materials I’ve received are recommending drinking lots of pineapple juice after surgery because it contain bromelain which reduces inflammation and also taking bran flakes to help prevent constipation!

So... from my standpoint, this is showing that alternatives are finally going more and more mainstream. HOORAY!

Antibiotics May Be Hurting Your Memory

Antibiotics may be hurting your memory ability. You go to the doctor for a cold and the doc gives you an antibiotic to take even though your cold was caused by a virus and antibiotic drugs don’t kill viruses. The problem is taking the antibiotic drug also kills the good bacteria in your gut.

You might be saying, “No big deal”. Well, it actually is a very big deal. The antibiotic may also be inhibiting the growth of new cells in the part of the brain associated with memory. The researchers believe that the antibiotic is causing this damage by lowering levels of a type of white blood cell that is thought to connect the gut, brain and immune system.

So…what you need to do if you can’t avoid taking the antibiotic for an infection, as these researchers suggest, is to take a probiotic supplement at the same time as the antibiotic. Keep taking the supplement for several weeks after the surgery to keep developing and feeding the good bacteria.

A Unique Way To Bring Joy Into People’s Lives

Peggy Wheatcroft was getting ready to celebrate her 80th birthday and she didn’t want a birthday party. She decided to do something different.

Peggy took 80 envelopes and put $80 in twenty-dollar bills in each envelope. She took the envelopes and gave them to 80 people with a note asking them, in honor of her birthday, to give the money to anyone they chose. She asked them to find someone who least expected it. She also asked them to write and tell her about the person’s experience. What she wrote was “Let’s spread a small bit of joy!!”

It took her a year to distribute the envelopes. When the people who were the givers started to write her, the first thing she noticed was the joy people experienced when giving the gift in person to someone. The second thing was the connection to her when the givers explained the source of the money to the recipient.

The research shows that it is better to give than receive as our bodies release the “feel good” chemicals that reinforce our giving. So…it doesn’t have to be $80 to 80 people, just consider whatever the amount how you’re bringing joy to someone else and to yourself. Thank you, Peggy for showing us a unique way to celebrate a birthday and may you have many more!

The Dangers of The 5G Network

5G is the term for the network that is beginning to be installed around the country as a way to dramatically speed up our internet connection and transmission speeds. While speed is great, there are major problems with 5G networks that is extremely troublesome.

To begin with 5G networks need to be placed every 500 feet in order to work. This means there will be a dramatic increase in the radiation being emitted at each of these units. What 5G does is it utilizes millimeter-wave frequencies, which are smaller waves from those emitted in 4G networks. This has an effect when it hits our bodies.

These are just a few of the new health concerns with 5G networks:

1. Israeli researchers found that our sweat ducts act as an antenna for these millimeter waves, which means our bodies will absorb more of this energy

2. Governments use millimeter wave devices in crowd control systems. For people caught in the wave it makes them feel like their skin’s on fire.

3. Hundreds of scientists from around the world sent a letter to the United Nations and the World Health Organization warning of serious concerns regarding these Electromagnetic fields (EMF).

Our bodies are actually affected at levels below where most international guidelines have been set. This means we may experience an increased cancer risk, increase in free radicals in our bodies, damage to the reproductive system, learning and memory issues and neurological disorders.

Safety testing on 5G Networks has simply not been done, yet it’s being rolled out as you read this blurb.

There is a way to stop this rollout and get some real research done. There are bills in the House and Senate to change the rule so that local communities can have greater input over how 5G Networks are installed.

So…contact your elected Representative and Senator to let them know they need to support the bills on local communities having real input.

Bacteria In Your Gut Can Increase The Effectiveness Of Chemotherapy

Who would have thought that your gut bacteria can help your anti-cancer drugs fight your cancer? A study published in Immunity reported that the researchers found two bacteria in the human gut that activate immune cells which boosts the effectiveness of a commonly prescribed anticancer drug.

The researchers found that these two bacteria actually activated cancer-fighting T-cell immune responses. This enhanced the effects of the chemo drug cyclophosphamide when it was given to advanced lung and ovarian cancer patients. With 38 patients in the study, they found that the treatment lead to the patients being able to live with the cancer but that it didn’t worsen.

These results open up an entirely new area of research of using the bodies gut bacteria to heal.

Using The Mind To Be Younger In Body

Research conducted by the Langer Mindfulness Institute took a group of 80-year-olds and tested them for vision and hearing, grip strength, memory and dexterity before being taken to a monastery that was decorated to replicate life in 1959. The decor also included photos of the participants when they were that age.

Everyone wore 1950s fashions and entertainment was all 1950s TV shows, movies, books and music. They were also instructed to discuss sports and events that did happen during that era, but to talk about them in the present tense. They were told to think of themselves as actually being younger.

After five days, the participants did look younger and their scores on everything including eyesight had improved.

Another study by the Institute involved two groups of college students hoping to enter the military. All participants had 20/20 vision or better. One group was given flight suits to wear and to think of themselves as Air Force pilots while they used flight simulators. The other group just sat in the flight simulators and were told that the simulator was broken so they should just pretend to fly the plane.

Afterwards, both groups were given vision tests again and the group who viewed themselves as Air Force pilots and flew the simulator improved their vision by 40% verse the other group. So…if you want to be younger, get your mind working for you and think younger, even if it’s not the 1950s.

A Pill To Enhance Memory Brought To You By Jellyfish

There’s now a pill made from a substance in Jellyfish that is improving memory. The substance is called apoaequorin and it is found in only one species of Jellyfish. It works differently in the brain from other memory enhancers.

While it seems to actually reverse some of the effects of aging on the brain, it also seems to help alleviate the effects of serious neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Three researchers received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work with apoaequorin to track calcium activity in the body’s cells. This initial work has been taken further and it’s been found that apoaequorin also has a powerful protective effect on brain cells.

One study with 56 people from 20 to 78 showed significant improvements in memory after taking 10 mg of Prevagen (the brand name) daily for 30 days. Fifty percent reported gains in general memory and information retention. One-third did better in recall and a whopping 84% showed improvement in their ability to remember driving directions (wives love this impact on their husbands!).

Other benefits that have been reported include users feeling mentally sharper, having more mental energy and even sleeping more soundly.

If you don’t notice improvements in four weeks, you might need to increase your dosage to 20 mg daily. Also, since Jellyfish are a different species, people with fish or shellfish can use it. So…thank you Jellyfish for have a beneficial use besides stinging people!

The Importance of Vitamin D During Pregnancy

We have become so concerned about getting exposure to the Sun that we attempt to eliminate all unprotected exposure to the Sun’s rays. – hand me the sunscreen! We may have gone too far.

Some of the research has been showing that when a pregnant woman is Vitamin D deficient that it has a negative and lifelong impact on her newborn baby. The child can experience allergies and more frequent colds and flu. The child may also be at greater risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even schizophrenia.

When a mom was Vitamin D deficient, this deficiency was passed onto the child so that they had a 44% increased risk of developing schizophrenia as an adult. Separately, this deficiency has also been linked to an increase in autism in 6-year-old children.

Taking the benefits even further, research by http://GrassrootsHealth.net found that 40 to 60% of preterm births could be prevented by raising the woman’s Vitamin D level to just 40 ng/ml.

While it would be great to get 20 minutes of a noon time level of exposure to the Sun without sun screen on to stimulate your body to manufacture Vitamin D, you may not be able to get outside on a regular basis, or you’re too far north, or you still have a fear of sun exposure without a sun screen. In that case, I’d recommend that the mother take a Vitamin D3 supplements so that her blood level of D is between 60 to 80 ng/ml. This is a level that is giving you the optimum benefit of Vitamin D.

Make sure the mother takes Vitamin D3 as it is better absorbed by the body. Also, add Vitamin K2 as it helps the D to be absorbed and used correctly by the body.

A New Way to Learn Subconsciously

There’s a new way to learn that could help you master complex manual skills without even trying. It’s called passive haptic learning and it combines using wearable computers coupled with your sense of touch. In this study the participants were playing online games while they wore a pair of Google Glasses that were programmed to deliver audio signals of words spelled out in Morse code. In addition, half the participant’s glasses were equipped with a built-in, bone-conduction transducer that simultaneous delivers taps behind the right ear. After each hour-long session, they were asked to tap out letters in Morse code. At the end of four session, they were asked to tap out a sentence that used the entire alphabet in Morse code.

The group that received only the audio signals were only about 47% accurate in typing out the sentence, while the group who received both the audio signal and the tap behind the ear had a 94% accuracy level. Similar results were achieved by participants that used tactile gloves which delivered vibrations to the fingertips to teach piano and Braille. So…we may be moving into a new way of learning – tap that!

You’re Getting Older and Want to Continue Working, Consider Using Pot

Older Americans are either choosing or are being forced to work past retirement age due to their financial situation. If you’re one of them or you know someone who this applies to, you or this person can now be helped to work longer by using medical marijuana.

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health did a survey of over 100,000 people over the age of 50. They found, in states where medical marijuana is legal, that the survey respondents who were using marijuana reported a nearly 5% decrease in reported pain levels and a 6.6 increase in feelings of wellness.

I’ve recently been using a CBD cream topically on a groin pull and I’ve been very impressed with the cream’s ability to quickly reduce or even stop the pain. I tried one cream that had 500 mg of CBD and it worked to a degree. When I switched to a cream having 1,000 mg of CBD cream it made a major difference in reducing my pain level.

So…if you’re in a state where it’s legal, experiment with CBD cream or oil to reduce your pain. If you’re in a state where medical marijuana is legal, you can explore even further. You may be pleasantly surprised with the reduction in pain you’ll experience. And if you want to or need to work longer, it will be a piece of cake (or at least a cookie) to be able to do that.

The Power of Gratitude

The concept of having an attitude of gratitude is one of those statements that you might not attach much importance to. In this case, you’d be wrong. Researchers have been finding that actually having an attitude of gratitude has health benefits for the person.

What is gratitude anyway? Dr. Robert Emmons, author of The Little Book of Gratitude defines it as affirming the goodness in one’s life and recognizing that its source lies outside of the self.  It’s also feeling indebted to another person and even nature for the beauty it provides us.

So, what happens when you have more of this attitude? One of the early studies had people writing down 5 things the they were grateful for once a week for 10 weeks. At the end of the study, they reported feeling 25% happier and they spent 30% more time exercising.

Other studies showed that the benefits of journaling your gratitude resulted in people sleeping better, having lower blood pressure and even smokers reducing their smoking by 40%. Finally, it allowed older adults with early-stage heart failure to lower their levels of disease-causing inflammation.
So…get a journal and start writing away about what you are grateful for. It can make a world of difference in your life!

Things You Can Do When Tragedy Strikes

You may not be aware that I live in Virginia Beach, VA where a mass shooting occurred a week ago when a gunman entered in a local government office building and killed 12 people.

A friend of mine, Kathy Brown, emailed me after it happened. She wanted as many people to know about several simple yet effective strategies that you can use on yourself, family and loved ones when tragedy strikes.

Here’s what Kathy wrote to me (with me adding comments in parentheses): I heard the news about the shooting in Virginia Beach. This is so incredibly awful. I hope you and Elizabeth are safe and that all of your friends are safe, too (they and we were all safe).

You may know that Chapter 18 of Educate Your Brain (this is the name of the book Kathy wrote) is about using Brain Gym (which I talk about in my Keynotes and Seminars) to resolve stress, distress and trauma.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School several years ago, I began wondering “What can I do to help?” so I had my graphic designer turn this chapter into its own PDF so that I could post it on my book website as a free download, available to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

http://balancepointpublishing.com/home/tools-resources-2/chapter-18/

The chapter teaches Hook-ups and Positive Points (these are 2 Brain Gyms that I teach in my Switched-On Selling and other Seminars to get rid the a negative charge off of a negative situation in 2 minutes), and tells the story of how I used them and other Brain Gym movements to deal with the stress I experience after 9/11 when I was living far away from home in Germany.

My belief is that when awful things happen doing these simple Brain Gym movements can keep the trauma from settling so deeply into the mind-body system (which can affect your health and wellness).

I also added an Appendix that tells the story of Svetlana Masgutova’s work in Russia (I know Svetlana and she’s an amazing woman) following a catastrophic train explosion and fire, Finally, I also talk about the work of Tan Liane and Henry Remanley in Banda Aceh after the tsunami that struck there killing thousands.

You’re welcome to include it in an email to your entire list. (Kathy also told me you can forward this to anyone that you’d like to)

So…this is Jerry again. Please let me know if you find doing these Brain Gym’s helpful for you to resolve stresses and trauma you may experience. You can even use these Brain Gyms to get rid of the charge from an old trauma that is still affecting you.

Yours truly,
Jerry
