A Pill To Enhance Memory Brought To You By Jellyfish

There’s now a pill made from a substance in Jellyfish that is improving memory. The substance is called apoaequorin and it is found in only one species of Jellyfish. It works differently in the brain from other memory enhancers.

While it seems to actually reverse some of the effects of aging on the brain, it also seems to help alleviate the effects of serious neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Three researchers received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work with apoaequorin to track calcium activity in the body’s cells. This initial work has been taken further and it’s been found that apoaequorin also has a powerful protective effect on brain cells.

One study with 56 people from 20 to 78 showed significant improvements in memory after taking 10 mg of Prevagen (the brand name) daily for 30 days. Fifty percent reported gains in general memory and information retention. One-third did better in recall and a whopping 84% showed improvement in their ability to remember driving directions (wives love this impact on their husbands!).

Other benefits that have been reported include users feeling mentally sharper, having more mental energy and even sleeping more soundly.

If you don’t notice improvements in four weeks, you might need to increase your dosage to 20 mg daily. Also, since Jellyfish are a different species, people with fish or shellfish can use it. So…thank you Jellyfish for have a beneficial use besides stinging people!

Some Hope For ALS Sufferers

Dr. Joseph Beckman from the Linus Pauling Institute reported that zinc deficiencies in a  mouse model of ALS, also know as Lou Gehrig disease, accelerated the progression of the disease and that treating the mice with appropriate amounts of zinc normalized the mortality curve.

Long-term Vitamin E Use May Reduce The Risk of ALS

vitEA study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology analyzed the data from over one million people from five longitudinal studies and they found dietary Vitamin E reduced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, causes the degeneration of neurons that control muscle contractions. The researchers found that the longer someone used Vitamin E the lower the rate of ALS.

This research confirms a study reported in the Netherlands which reported that the odds of developing ALS was 50% lower among people in the highest group of Vitamin E intake from food.

New Hope For Preventing ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)

ALS is a devastating disease that quickly and aggressively kills neurons controlling voluntary muscle movement.

Researchers at the University Medical Center, Utrecht and Wageningen University, Netherlands, compared the diets of 132 ALS patients and 220 control subjects.

The ALS patients showed significantly less Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and Vitamin E in their diets. The researchers think that this lack in the diet may possibly make them more susceptible to ALS.

The researchers’ findings indicate that Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and Vitamin E protect our neurons, making people who regularly consume them 50 to 60% less vulnerable to ALS than those who don’t. Reported in Natural Solutions.
