A ½ teaspoon of Cinnamon a day had an amazing effect for men and women with type 2 diabetes (which is becoming an epidemic in this country). This study by researchers at the USDA's Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center found the participant's blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides fell 12 to 30% in just 40 days. If you are diabetic, check with your doctor to find out if you will need to reduce your dose by using cinnamon. While it hasn't been researched, it might possibly help prevent type 2 diabetes. So…sprinkle, sprinkle everywhere with cinnamon.

Men Having A Heart Attack Are Better Off Being Married
The researchers found that married men having a heart attack arrived at the Emergency Room 30 minutes sooner than single guys. Here’s the interesting part, the wives didn’t even have to be there when the symptoms occurred.
The study’s lead author suggested that “the husbands knew what their wives would say and didn’t want them to be angry if they delayed medical attention.” By the way, married women having a heart attack didn’t arrive at the hospital sooner than a single woman.
Now…for the single guy - to get yourself to the hospital sooner, you can picture what your mother would say. That should do it!

Using Resveratrol May Extend Your Life
A recent study has also found that it may have the power to expend your life by mimicking the benefits of dramatic calorie restricts, without the hunger pains.
In this double blind study, researchers gave obese but otherwise healthy men either 150 mg of resveratrol or a placebo for 30 day. The benefits from the resveratrol included reduced blood pressure, triglycerides, inflammation and fatty deposits in the liver.
The researchers described these benefits as a combination of calorie restriction and/or endurance training. Not a bad deal for taking around 150 mg of resveratrol a day.

A New Look At How We Build Muscle In Our Body
You might be saying, “Huh, how can it do that?” It turns out that the amino acid leucine in your body can signal genes in your muscle to grow and build protein even during times of food deprivation so long as these amino acids are circulating in your blood stream. To get enough leucine, you need to be eating dairy products especially quality cheese and whey protein. The one draw back is that you’ll need to eat a lot of these leucine containing products to get the quantities of leucine to build muscle. The one exception is whey, which gives you be amount of leucine you need by eating 3 ounces per day.
Another study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise found that eating 20 grams of whey protein 30 minutes before resistance training boosts your body’s metabolism for as much as 24 hours after a workout! This means you’ll burn more calories even when you are doing the same things as someone else during that 24 hour period.
So…a little whey protein a day, keeps those muscles growing.

Bad Cholesterol May Be Losing Its Bad Image
As you probably know, docs want you to raise your good HDL cholesterol and lower your bad LDL cholesterol. This advice may not apply any more.
Scientists at Texas A&M University have found that LDL cholesterol is actually needed by the body to build new muscle. This finding is as important for children developing new muscle as it is for older folks who are losing muscle. LDL cholesterol also helps circulate Vitamin D around our body.
Now here’s the kicker, Dr. Harlan Krumholz of Yale’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine found that old people with low cholesterol died twice as often from a heart attacks as did old people with high cholesterol.
In addition, a review of nineteen studies of more than 68,000 deaths by the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota found that low cholesterol predicted an increased risk of dying from gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases.
This means the prescriptions that are written for cholesterol lowering drugs may not be saving lives at all; instead they may be causing more deaths by lowered cholesterol.
As a matter of fact, the medical community recently lowered acceptable cholesterol levels to below 200 mg/dl. This reduction put many more people on cholesterol drugs.
To make matters worse, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute is now urging cholesterol screening for all children between the ages of 9 and 11. The American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed this recommendation.
These are probably not great ideas! These results point to a big oops since a lot of modern medicine is focused on reducing bad cholesterol.
It’s your heart.

Another Reason To Exercise – Preventing Cancer
Researchers reported in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention that regular weight training can cut cancer risks in men by up to 40%.
The researchers tracked the lifestyle of 8,500 men for more than two decades. Each volunteer had regular medical check-ups that included tests of their muscular strength. The men who worked out regularly and had the highest muscle strength were between 30 and 40% less likely to die from cancer.
The researchers suggested doing resistance training at least two days a week. Time wise, all you need to be doing is one set of repetitions with enough weight to reach your muscles’ fatigue level.
So…lift that barge, tote that bale and keep from getting cancer.

Bank Relights Entire Building with Full Spectrum
Bank Relights Entire Building
One of our clients, a bank in Indiana, did some experimenting with the full-spectrum lighting that I talk about at many of my programs.
At my suggestion, they lit the lower level of the bank offices, where there are no windows, with full-spectrum lighting.
The feedback was so positive that they have now relamped the other two floors of the building!

Feedback From A Reader On The Full Spectrum Lights
Feedback From A Reader On The Full Spectrum Lights:
I just received an email from Carey Hansen in Green Bay about the impact of the full spectrum fluorescent lighting she had purchased from us at http://www.jtv-energy-lights.com
She was excited because it got rid of her seasonal affective disorder illness, which causes severe depression. Here’s what she said:
“Just wanted to let you know that earlier this year I purchased lighting for the office I work in. Normally in fall I suffer from SAD… this year I had little or no affect from the change of seasons.
The only thing I can attribute it to is the lighting. If I hadn’t tried it I wouldn’t have believed it!!! I am definitely sold on how much lighting can affect a person. Thank you sooo much!”
Carey, you are welcome.
Researchers from the University of Toronto reported in a study published in Archives of General Psychiatry have figured out what is going on in the brain. They did brain scans of volunteers and discovered that levels of serotonin were lower in autumn and winter than spring and summer.
Because sunlight regulates a protein controlling serotonin levels, lack of sunshine means less serotonin, which is the bodies "feel good" chemical.

Alternative Therapies Gaining Ground In Hospitals
Alternative Therapies Gaining Ground In Hospitals:
The American Hospital Association reports that 37% of American hospitals are making complementary and alternative treatments available to their patients. The therapies include acupuncture, touch therapy, and music and art therapy. This percentage has grown from 2005, when it was offered by only 25% of hospitals.
The majority of hospitals are using patient satisfaction as the best way of determining whether an alterative treatment was beneficial. Next, the hospital looks at clinical data on its effectiveness. At the Cleveland Clinic, half of 1,700 patients undergoing heart surgery opted for alternatives and 93% of the patients found the services were helpful.
As an example, a nurse was having difficulty inserting an IV into a patient’s arm because of the patient’s anxiousness over her scheduled surgery. Instead of continuing to prod and poke the patient, the nurse called in a massage therapist and in 10 minutes the IV was in place.
So…if you have time to make a choice as to which hospital you go to, ask them if they offer alternative treatment programs. If they don’t, make sure to tell or write the head honcho as to why you’re not going to be using their facility. If enough folks did that, the 37% figure would grow quickly and dramatically and so would the benefits to the patients. (Reported in USA Today Online 9-14-08)

Drug Side-Effects Are Robbing The Body of Nutrients
You may not be aware that many prescription drugs affect the way our bodies absorb and use essential nutrients. Analyzing four categories of common drugs for correlations to the loss of nutrients reveals the following potential deficiencies and what supplement to take to avoid the deficiency:
-
Statins, which lower cholesterol, deplete Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) – Take 30 to 60 mg daily
-
Vasodilators for high blood pressure deplete Vitamin B6 – Take 2 mg daily
-
Beta-blockers for high blood pressure deplete CoQ10 – Take 30 to 60 mg daily
-
Diuretics for hypertension or congestive heart failure deplete magnesium, potassium and zinc – Take up to 400 mg of magnesium, 8 mg of zinc and 3,500 mg of potassium
-
Hormone therapies such as birth control pills deplete Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium, zinc – Take 2 mg B6, 75 mg of Vitamin C, 400 mcg of folic acid, 400 mg of magnesium and 8 mg of zinc.
If your doctor prescribes any of these drugs be sure to ask about the wisdom of taking these recommended supplements to offset the potential nutrient depletion from the drugs.

A HIGH PSA TEST FOR GUYS MAY NOT BE CANCER
Us guy's fear getting a high result on a PSA test because it may mean we have Prostate Cancer. Well, that may not be true.
The Texas Institute of Functional Medicines in their newsletter reported on a study in Finland that found that there can be several situations that can cause a high PSA reading.
Some of these readings can be caused by bacteria, fungus, virus and heavy metals.
High readings can even be caused by scar tissue from previous biopsies as well as allergies and the drugs used to treat the allergies.
Your doctor may not know this information. So, if you get a high level, ask him to check out these other possibilities before you have a biopsy done.

There's A New Fabric In Town - Holofiber
There's a new textile called Holofiber that has been shown to increase circulation and increase the amount of oxygen that is able to go through the skin.
The fiber uses microscopic mineral crystals that take certain wavelengths of light and the body's radiant energy and redirect them into the body. It actually increases blood flow and oxygen delivery into the tissues in the immediate area.
One study of 20 men, who had diabetes, with circulatory problems in their extremities, found that within one hour of wearing the Holofiber that their feet had an 8% higher rate of oxygenation and a 12% increase in their forearms.
For healthy men the increase was 10% in the feet and 30% in the forearms. It reduces and relieves pain and increases healing in diabetics.
For Raynaud sufferers it reduces pain and inflammation. Athletes are using it to increase oxygen levels to boost muscle performance.
You can contact the Whitaker Wellness Institute about this textile at 800 648-7024 or go to achieve-o2.com.
