Doctors Are Finally Catching On - Foods Can Heal

Doctors are finally realizing what I’ve been writing about for years that foods can be used as medicines to heal and even more importantly keep us healthy in the first place. As an example, the Geisinger Health System has established a Fresh Food Farmacy that provides healthy foods to patients and teaches them how to incorporate them into their daily diet. For one patient who had diabetes and had previously had a toe amputated has been on the program a year and a half. During that time period, he lost 60 pounds and other tests showed he moved out of the danger zone for patients with diabetes. The docs are finding that foods can have as much power to heal as drugs.

At Kaiser Permanente, some docs are handing out recipes instead of prescriptions to their patients. The insurance companies are finding that healthier patients result in fewer visits to the emergency room.  Congress has even gotten into the act by creating a bipartisan Food Is Medicine working group last year to explore how government sponsored food programs could address hunger and lower health care costs due to complications from chronic diseases. Maybe they can also look at the food served to patients in hospitals and nursing homes. A few years ago, studies were done that found that healthy people who entered a hospital for treatment left malnourished.

The Geisinger folks have found that their Fresh Food Farmacy lowered the risk of serious diabetes complications by 40% and cut hospitalizations by 70% compared to other diabetics in the area who did not have access to their program. These are pretty amazing figures for the impact of real food on our health.

So…the next area to explore to improve our health is getting Organic Food Standards away from being distorted and controlled by industry. As an example. these standards have been severely weakened so that even feedlot operators can label the meat from their cattle organic.

Organic Farming Beats Conventional Farming

A study published in Bio science reviewed a 22-year study comparing organic and conventional farming on similar plots with similar crops. Over the 22 years of this study, the organic sites generated yields equal to or greater than the conventional crops. During drought years the conventional crops collapsed, while the organic crops' production fluctuated only slightly. The conventional crops had pesticides leaching into the water that exceeded EPA safety limits, while the organic crops used 30% less fossil energy.

So, as a country what are we waiting for? Besides, organic produce even tastes better!

Eating Organic May Be More Important Than You Think

A study reported in Prevention Magazine found that the higher price for organic groceries is worth the price. Kids, ages 2 to 5, who ate a 75% organic diet, had chemicals at a level six times lower in their diet
than kids on a conventional diet. These chemicals cause neurological damage, leukemia and other types of cancer.  The chemicals they were looking at are the ones commonly used in agricultural pesticides in the US. So...organic may really pay for children and even adults.

GMO Ballot Initiative In California

GMOThere was a ballot initiative in California to require Genetically Modified Organisms in foods to be labeled so consumers can have a choice. This freaked out the companies like Monsanto and DuPont that produce GMO.

They and their allies like Coca Cola, General Mills and many others donated around $50,000,000 to defeat the measure. The groups and organizations supporting the passage of the initiative raised only around $4 million.

The opponents of labeling produced commercials that lied outright and even said that the FDA agreed with their position, which was possibly a violation of federal law.

The Organic Consumers Association is calling on consumers to boycott these organic and "natural" brands that are owned by major manufacturers. The amount they donated to defeat the labeling initiative:

  • PepsiCo (Donated $2.5M): Naked Juice, Tostito’s Organic, Tropicana Organic

  • Kraft (Donated $2M): Boca Burgers and Back to Nature

  • Safeway (Member of Grocery Manufacturers Association, which donated $2M):“O” Organics

  • Coca-Cola (Donated $1.7M): Honest Tea, Odwalla

  • General Mills (Donated $1.2M): Muir Glen, Cascadian Farm, Larabar

  • Con-Agra (Donated $1.2M): Orville Redenbacher’s Organic, Hunt’s Organic, Lightlife, Alexia

  • Kellogg’s (Donated $791k): Kashi, Bear Naked, Morningstar Farms, Gardenburger

  • Smucker’s (Donated $555k ): R.W. Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic

  • Unilever (Donated $467k): Ben & Jerry’s

  • Dean Foods (Donated $254k): Horizon, Silk, White Wave

Even with all of this money, the results were still close. The opponents of labeling received 53% of the vote and the supporters of labeling received 47% of the vote.

While we lost this first time, over 90% of the people in this country support labeling, so its only a matter of time before the GMO companies and their allies lose.

Saying It With Healthy Flowers

VeriFloraAmericans spend around $20 billion on cut flowers every year. Many of these flowers are produced with chemical pesticides.

As an example, there are around 127 different pesticides on the flowers grown in Columbia, same thing for Kenya. Two of these chemicals are highly toxic and are even banned from being used in this country yet they come into this country on the flowers.

You now have an option available. You can now purchase organic flowers. There is a third-party verification program called Veriflora that guarantees that the flowers were grown sustainably. Organic flower sales have grown by as much as 50% per year.

So…if your supermarket or flower shop doesn’t offer organic flowers, ask them to start carrying them.

Fighting Coronary Artery Disease With Cocoa

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that cocoa flavonols could improve poor blood vessel function in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Poor blood vessel function is recognized as an early stage in the development of CAD.
The researchers found that daily cocoa flavonal consumption more than doubled the number of specialized cells that repair blood vessels and maintain the vessels, which keeps the vessels healthy.
Increasing these cells decreases the risk of death from CAD with no side effects! So… dark chocolate cocoa, anyone?

Drinking Tea Can Improve Mental Focus

teamemory Dutch researchers asked volunteers to perform tasks designed to test their attention before, 10 minutes after and an hour after drinking a beverage that contained the two most active ingredients in tea.

The tea drinkers scored significantly better than the controls. The two compounds that had this impact were caffeine and L-theanine.

While caffeine can make some people jumpy, L-theanine doesn’t have that effect. L-theanine improved concentration by rapidly increasing the activity of alpha waves in the brain while boosting the levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that calms the brain and relieves anxiety. You can get the benefit of L-theanine by drinking tea or taking a supplement with Suntheanine.

So…tea anyone?

Staying Focused Is Another Reason To Eat Dark Chocolate – Yummy!

Research presented at the British Psychological Society’s annual conference found that eating dark chocolate containing at least 70% cocoa may keep the brain alert by increasing blood flow.
When adults consumed a drink containing this amount of cocoa, they reported less mental fatigue.

American Medical Association Backs Organic Foods

ama The AMA has chosen to adopt a policy supporting a sustainable food system. The AMA has recognized that our industrial food production methods are a significant contributor to increased antibiotic resistance, climate change, air and water pollution.

The AMA sees locally produced and organic foods as a way to reduce fuel use, decrease packaging and waste disposal while preserving farmland. All this leads to cleaner air and lowers the incidence of asthma attacks and other respiratory problems.

If the AMA agrees that organic is good, it’s got to be good!

A Better Choice Than Statin Drugs – Red Yeast Rice

There is a lot of dispute about taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol due to the numerous side effects that patients experience.

Well, there’s now a natural option that has research behind it. In a study led by Dr. David Becker at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Pennsylvania, patients had extremely high LDL levels. They had all taken statin drugs, but had stopped because of the side effects. Half the group took 1800 mg of red yeast rice twice a day for 24 weeks, while the other half took a placebo.

The average drop in LDL cholesterol was 43 points. The placebo group dropped an average of 11 points. The only side effects were infrequent, mild headaches and abdominal discomfort. If you have liver disease, don’t take red yeast rice.

This is a better track record than statin drugs, at a lower price tag and much lower risk of side effects. So…head to your local health foods store and give Red Yeast Rice a whirl.

A New Way To Build Bone And Increase Bone Density

According to Dr. Julian Whitaker there is a new product soylife manufactured from the germ of the soy bean that appears to build new bone and increase bone density.

It’s called SoyLife® . The germ contains the highest concentration of isoflavones of all parts of the soy bean. It also has other substances that increase your bones’ health.

A two-year double-blind study of 400 healthy postmenopausal women 40 to 60 years old found after six months that those women taking 180 mg of SoyLife showed a significant reduction in the rate of bone loss.

After one year those women actually increased the entire body’s level of bone density!

The Right Grains Are Good For Your Heart

The Right Grains Are Good For Your Heart

You may have read recent reports stating that staying away from wheat products may be beneficial to your health. The part that’s usually missing in this advice is for you to stay away from enriched wheat products verse whole wheat products.

A study reported in the online journal Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases analyzed seven studies involving more than 285,000 participants. The study found that eating 2 1/2 slices of whole wheat bread each day reduced risk of a heart attack by 20%.

Be careful when reading the labels of products. Manufacturers can be sneaky by putting words like Spring Wheat or Spring Wheat White Bread in the list of ingredients. They will also contain Whole Wheat when they just put some whole wheat flour in the product, while most of the rest is enriched flour. The simple way is to look for 100% Whole Wheat on the label.

Also, don’t forget that when you are eating rice to make sure it is brown rice and not white or enriched white rice. (Reported Prevention October 2007)

Organic Products Are Booming But Government Funding Isn’t

As you may be aware, you are finding more and more products on your grocer’s shelves that are organic. The category is growing so fast that Stonyhill Farms, an organic yogurt manufacturer, is even running out of organic cows to meet the demand.

It seems the only ones unaware of this trend is Congress. They just approved an amendment raising the funding for organic agriculture research from $1.8 million per year to $5 million. While this sounds like a big increase, when you compare it to the Department of Agriculture’s annual $90 billion budget and the $25 billion (not millions) that goes to annual crop subsidies to farms that depend on chemical farming and to research in genetically engineered crops, it turns out to be a paltry amount.

So…in the coming years, if you can’t find organic products when you want them, just remember how Washington sets it priorities. Pop your Congressional and Senatorial representatives an email – www.house.gov and www.senate.gov – if you’d like to make your opinion count.

Genetically Engineered Cows Milk Leads To Twins

A study recently published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine found that a group of women who consumed milk products from cows given genetically engineered hormones had a five times greater chance of giving birth to fraternal twins than a group of vegans who didn’t consume any milk products.

The study found that the growth hormone used in cows increased ovulations in the women and that the hormone persisted in the women’s bodies after it was consumed. Since the FDA does not require that food manufacturers label genetically engineered foods, the only way to avoid the bovine growth hormone is to buy organic milk.

And once again, if you’d like to make your opinion count about the foods you and your loved ones eat, pop an email to you-know-who…
