TV May Cause Attention Deficit In Kids

A study published in Pediatrics had parents of 1,345 children aged 1 and 3 report on their children's viewing habits. The researchers found that for every hour of TV the children regularly watched on a daily basis they increased their chances of developing attention deficit disorders later in life by 10 percent. This means that kids who watched three to four hours daily had a 30 to 40% increase in risk. The researchers believe it’s the unrealistically fast-paced visual images typical of most TV programming that may be altering normal brain development.

From the research that's been done in the field of Brain Gym, this over stimulation may cause the survival part of the brain to increase its development. This means the child has a reduced ability to focus and concentrate while acting restless and impulsive and being easily confused.

So…if you have very young children, do your best to not turn the TV into their babysitter.

ADHD Is In The Brain

Researchers in Bowling Green have found that individuals with ADHD have deficits on the right side of the frontal lobes of their brain. The researchers induced ADHD in young rats and then attempted various treatments. The researchers found that rough and tumble play especially during adolescence was able to reduce both hyperactivity and ADD. So what are we doing in schools - eliminating gym class and recess so kids can get ready to take Federal government demanded testing.

The Brain Gym(r) movement exercises that I use in my Switched-On Selling and Management seminars are designed to give children and adults the movement exercises that they need. To learn more about Brain Gym go to www.BrainGym.org.

NATURAL OPTIONS TO RITALIN FOR KIDS WITH ADD/AHD

Ritalin is being given to kids in amounts that are epidemic with no clear understanding of what the long term side effects on kids might be.  There are now some options you can try with nutrients.

One is called LECI-PS which is a blend of phospholipids that facilitate communication between cells. One of substances in the blend is called phosphatidylserine or PS for short. Around 3,000 studies have been carried out on PS showing increased concentration, attention span and memory.

The other substance is called DMAE. It was actually used effectively before ritalin was developed. DMAE improves attention, memory and flexibility of thinking. Dr. Carl Pfeiffer administered it to 108 children with ADD/ADHD. 71% of the lids improved with attention span, mood and scholastic performance.

Another cause to be looked at is the possibility of allergies including food and other substances being the cause of the ADD/ADHD. I talk about food allergy checking in my book, Switched-On Living.

A Unique Way To Improve A Child’s Concentration And Reduce ADHD

A 2010 study published by the NPI Center (Natural and Nutritional Products Industry Center) worked with children with ADHD. The children were given krill oil for a period of 13 weeks.

The study compared EEG patterns and found that the children taking krill oil markedly improved their concentration by 60%. A 2007 study found that adults taking krill oil reported a 50% improvement in planning skills and 49% improvement in social skills. The dose of krill oil was 500 mg per day.

The omega-3 fat in the krill oil improved the symptoms of ADHD more effectively than drugs like Ritalin and Concerta. A good source of krill oil is from Mercola.com.

Mistaking Iron Deficiency For ADHD

adhd3The symptoms attributed to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are poor concentration, attention span and irritability.

Well, it also turns out that these symptoms can also be symptoms of iron deficiency anemia in children.

So…if you, school officials or your doc thinks your child is ADHD, make sure you have them checked for iron levels before putting them on drugs.

A Way To Improve Literacy For Children With ADHD

omega3adhdA study published in Nutrition reported that Omega-3 DHA may be able to improve literacy in children with learning disabilities.

In this study, 90 children some who were ADHD between the ages of 9 to 12 participated in this randomized controlled trial.

The children were randomly assigned to receive four 500 mg capsules of either EPA-rich fish oil per day, a DHA-rich fish oil, or safflower oil per day.

After four months, the researchers observed that an increase of DHA in red blood cells which were associated with improved word reading and lower ratings of poor behavior. In children with learning disabilities, the benefits of DHA were even greater with significant improvements recorded for word reading, improved spelling and an improved ability to divide attention.

In addition, parents observed better behavior, lower hyperactivity and overall ADHD symptoms.

So…if you have a child with ADHD, you can experiment by giving the child DHA-rich fish oil with a total of 264 mg of EPA and 1,032 mg of DHA per day.

Understanding The Impact OF Electronic Pollution

amishairlinesWe are being exposed to more and more radio-frequency radiation and high frequency transmissions from cell phones, transmission towers, terrestrial antennas, Wi-Fi and Wi-Max telecommunication systems, broadband connections being sent over power lines and our own personal electronic equipment.

Is there a way to turn the clock back to see the difference now versus years ago in the impact of this electronic pollution?

Well, there is. Dr. Samuel Milham has found that Old-Order Amish people, who don’t use electricity, had lower rates of diabetes, heart disease, suicide and cancer.

They also have uncommonly low levels of neurodegenerative disease and not one case of ADHD.

Drinking Tea Can Improve Mental Focus

teamemory Dutch researchers asked volunteers to perform tasks designed to test their attention before, 10 minutes after and an hour after drinking a beverage that contained the two most active ingredients in tea.

The tea drinkers scored significantly better than the controls. The two compounds that had this impact were caffeine and L-theanine.

While caffeine can make some people jumpy, L-theanine doesn’t have that effect. L-theanine improved concentration by rapidly increasing the activity of alpha waves in the brain while boosting the levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that calms the brain and relieves anxiety. You can get the benefit of L-theanine by drinking tea or taking a supplement with Suntheanine.

So…tea anyone?

Attention Deficit Disorder Running Rampant

adhd2 A glance at the statistics around Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is quite disturbing.

Using diagnostic criteria analysis to determine the number of projected cases of ADHD, you get a figure of around 4% of school-age children potentially having ADHD.

Yet a study published a few years ago in the American Journal of Public Health found an ADHD rate of 63% in just one school district in southeastern Virginia when the data was analyzed. This would seem to indicate that the medical profession’s ability to accurately diagnose a child with ADHD is quite limited.

This misdiagnosis and mislabeling is resulting in way too many children being put on Ritalin, to the extent that one in five fifth grade Caucasian boys are taking Ritalin.

If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, one alternative to giving your child Ritalin is to use Brain Gym® movement and exercises.  You may find them to be the way back to normalcy for your kid. To find a Brain Gym (BG) Consultant in your area, go to BrainGym.org. To explore some of the Brain Gym Books, you can see my recommendations here at: Brain Gym - Children.

Another thing that I have found effective is using Steven Halpern’s music CD Connections and his subliminal CD Accelerating Learning.

Over the years, I’ve recommended to a number of parents that they play Connections (or Comfort Zone) an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening in the child’s environment. The child doesn’t have to stop whatever they are doing to listen to it; the CD just has to be playing in the environment.

When the child needs to study, have the child play Halpern’s Accelerating Learning CD. I’ve had at least a half dozen parents who have followed this recommendation share with me that their child, who had behavior problems in school, was behaving normally in school within a week of following these recommendations.

If you’d like to experiment with the Halpern music with your child, you can take advantage of my 60-day money-back guarantee to prove to yourself that what I am saying is true. If not, you can simply return the CDs for a refund. Review Music CDs

Increase Melatonin With Special Blue Light-Blocking Glasses

Melatonin has been shown to be of value for many things. It can help us sleep better, reduce headache frequency by around 50%, reduce the length of time a migraine lasts, decrease irritable bowel syndrome abdominal pain, lower nighttime blood pressure and protect us from cellular and mitochondrial DNA damage, which can cause cancer.

While all this sounds great, we may not be producing enough melatonin in our bodies to receive these benefits. Melatonin is produced at night and bright lights dramatically reduce the production of melatonin in our bodies. Recent research has discovered a way to stop bright light’s interference with melatonin production – wear blue light-blocking glasses. These glasses filter out just the blue wave length, which is the part of the spectrum that suppresses the production of melatonin.

Canadian researchers exposed volunteers to a bright light for an hour during the middle of the night. The volunteers wore either the blue lenses or gray lenses. The researchers then compared the volunteers’ melatonin levels to their levels on a night with no light exposure. They found that the gray-lenses group had a 46% decline in melatonin, while the blue-lenses group had a slight increase in production. Other reports have found that the blue glasses reduce daytime sleepiness, depression, as well as pain from fibromyalgia. Kids with ADHD also experienced an improvement in symptoms.

So…you might experiment with these special blue light-blocking glasses for a month. If you don’t want to do that but you still want to get the benefits of melatonin, you can take a supplement with 3 mg of melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime.

Kids With ADHD React To Certain Food Additives & Preservatives

A study reported in The Lancet states that the symptoms of kids with ADHD worsened when they consumed foods having certain food colorings and preservatives in them.

Some of the culprits included the preservative sodium benzoate, tartrazine, quinoline yellow, and allura red AC.

All these are used in carbonated drinks, fruit juices, jams, pickles, candy, soft drinks, cereals, pastries, soups, gums and other processed foods.

So…if you haven’t been doing it, it’s time to read food labels and eliminate these substances for the health of your kids.

Drug For ADHD Kids Causing Them To Be Shorter And Thinner

Researchers from Children’s Hospital Boston analyzed 22 studies examining the growth rates of ADHD kids taking prescribed stimulants such as Ritalin. They found that reduced appetite, a side effect of the drugs, negatively impacted the children’s expected weight and height gains.

While the kids may overcome any limitations in height and weight after they go off the drugs in early adulthood, keep in mind that these drugs, like cocaine and methamphetamine, fall into the DEA’s Schedule II designation, i.e., substances controlled because of their dependency, physical/psychological effects or likelihood for abuse in usage (per Wikipedia). In addition, no one is certain how this weight and height reduction is affecting brain development in these children.

So… reducing the reliance on drugs for kids with ADHD may produce the best long-term result for them. You can search the Teplitz Report archives at http://www.teplitz.com/ezine.htm for alternatives to Ritalin.

Skip The Drugs For Your Hyperactive Kids

A five-year study of 135 preschool students with symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), reported in School Psychology Review August 2007, found that non-drug interventions work effectively to prevent behavioral and academic problems in infants.

The interventions emphasized positive support in the home and at school resulting in a 17% decrease in aggression and a 21% improvement in social skills at home. At school, aggression decreased 28% and social skills improved 28%. The kids’ literacy skills increased up to three times their starting level.

The lead author of the study, George DuPaul, Ph.D., said that while medications for ADHD may treat symptoms, they do not improve the children’s academic and social skills the way behavioral interventions may.

From the research that I’ve seen, all they need to add to this to get even better results are the Brain Gym® movement exercises. To read a summary of the Brain Gym research and its power to help kids and adults reach their full potential, go to http://www.teplitz.com/BrainGymResearch2.htm

I also found a book which I recommend that deals with children and Brain-Gym, which you can find here: http://www.teplitz.com/book_epn_cart.htm#children

Combinations Of Food Additives and ADHD

A two-year study published in the Toxicological Sciences journal found that food additives that are safe by themselves are dangerous when consumed in combination. The researchers exposed mice to four common food additives (Brilliant Blue, MSG, Quinoline Yellow and aspartame) and examined the effects in the brain. The researchers found that, when combined, the additives interfered with the nerve signaling systems and actually stopped nerves from growing.

This interference with nerve cell growth in the brain may be contributing to the epidemic attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD in kids. So…feeding diet soda, which contains aspartame, and crackers with processed cheese, which contains MSG, to your kids may actually be setting them up to experience learning challenges.
