A New Look At How We Build Muscle In Our Body

It used to be that the wisdom was for the body to build muscle, you needed to eat lots of protein and carbohydrates because carbs fuel your muscles. According to Ori Hofmekler, author of several nutritional books, the body can still build muscle even when it’s deprived of food.
You might be saying, “Huh, how can it do that?” It turns out that the amino acid leucine in your body can signal genes in your muscle to grow and build protein even during times of food deprivation so long as these amino acids are circulating in your blood stream. To get enough leucine, you need to be eating dairy products especially quality cheese and whey protein. The one draw back is that you’ll need to eat a lot of these leucine containing products to get the quantities of leucine to build muscle. The one exception is whey, which gives you be amount of leucine you need by eating 3 ounces per day.
Another study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise found that eating 20 grams of whey protein 30 minutes before resistance training boosts your body’s metabolism for as much as 24 hours after a workout! This means you’ll burn more calories even when you are doing the same things as someone else during that 24 hour period.
So…a little whey protein a day, keeps those muscles growing.

Coconut Oil Is Coming On Strong

coconutoilA few years ago, the thought of having coconut oil as a regular part of your diet would have raised all kinds of objections that you’d be getting too much fat in your diet.

Well, times have changed and so has the information available to help us make a decision about it. Today, we realize there are fats that are actually helpful to us and one of them is coconut oil.

It turns out unprocessed virgin coconut oil consists mostly of lauric acid, which confers several health benefits. It turns out lauric acid doesn’t raise cholesterol, clog arteries or create other cardiovascular risks.

As a matter of fact, it actually enhances immune function and in therapeutic doses it may reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Coronary Disease And L-arginine

heart-healthSince I’m writing about the heart, let’s explore another way to heal it. A study published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology found that the long-term use of L-arginine supplements reduced the risk to patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

L-arginine is an amino acid that is the precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a gas released by the body to help promote healthy blood vessel flexibility and dilation. The improvement noted in the study was associated with a decrease in systolic blood pressure, peripheral vascular resistance as well as a decrease in aldosterone levels.

The only time not to use L-arginine is if you are experiencing an active herpes infection.

So… you now have two ways to protect your heart in one post!
