Massage Your Way Out Of Back Pain

Prevention Magazine reported that researchers at Seattle's Center for Health Studies compared three different therapies with people who had persistent back pain. The therapies were massage therapy, acupuncture and self-care. The best approach was massage which cut the need for painkillers by 36%. While the massage techniques compared included Swedish, deep-tissue, Shiatsu, and neuromuscular, the effects were all similar.

So...if you can't stop your back pain, get a certified massage therapist to do some rubbing on your back. A little rubbing seems to go a long way towards pain relief. You might also consider getting my book, Managing Your Stress: How To Relax and Enjoy since it contains a 2 minute treatment to alleviate lower back pain on yourself or someone else. REDUCE BACK PAIN

Tai Chi is a form of exercise that uses very slow, almost dance-like movements. A study in "Alternative Therapies" had two groups of 26 people each with back pain. The group which did Tai Chi for six weeks reported less pain and improved moods as compared to the controls. Tai Chi is also considered a moving meditation, so you also get the benefits of meditation, too!

Your local Rec Center may have courses you can take.

BACKACHES - TAKE WILLOW BARK

In a study in the American Journal of Medicine reported that for a group taking 240 mgs a day of willow bark, 40% of them became pain-free. The study had 191 people with lower back pain. Half of them took a sugar pill and the other half took 1 or 2 doses of willow bark extract. In addition for long-term treatment willow back is better than aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs because it prevents cartilage damage and a lower risk of side effects.

Add In Watching TV And Computer Time For A Negative Result

Your cardiovascular health is really affected negatively by too much sitting, time spent in front of a TV, computer or video game.

Researchers from the United Kingdom followed 4,500 Scottish men and women, looking at the impact of screen time. They found that people who spent at least two hours of leisure time in front of a TV or computer were more than twice as likely to have a heart attack or other cardiac event.

Those who spent four or more hours in front of the screen were 50% more likely to die.

For these screen people, their weight was higher, their cholesterol, C-reactive protein and other metabolic risk factors were all higher.

Interestingly, there were no negative links with activities such as reading, playing cards or board games.

Ways To Treat Back Pain

Back pain is all around us. It’s the most common type of pain and 30% of women and 26% of men will be struck by it during any given year.

Since more and more of us are sitting for longer and longer periods of time, this figure will probably continue to rise.

Sitting actually puts more pressure on the back than when you walk or even just stand.

There are a number of things you can do about it.
1. Get up every hour and take a short stretch break.
2. Lose weight if you are overweight.
3. Don’t overdo exercising on the weekend.
4. See a chiropractor or acupuncturist.
5. Take 2000 mg of Vitamin C every day.
6. Get a standing desk.
7. Do the Shiatsu (a Japanese finger pressure technique) lower back pain treatment.

Stopping The Pain With Spinal Cord Stimulation

scs2 While it’s been around since the 1960s, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) also known as neurostimulation, is a way to control spinal pain.

The technology has been improving and is now an FDA approved way both to reduce pain and also to improve functional ability and quality of life.

SCS gives patients who cannot have surgery an alternative. In fact, for some patients, SCS can be more effective than repeated surgery.

SCS can even reduce the need for medications, which means there are no side effects to be concerned about.

To find out if SCS is a good option for you, consult a physician who is knowledgeable about both chronic pain and SCS therapy.

So…I would recommend exploring SCS therapy before going through back surgery.

Women Can Wear High Heels Without The Pain

heels Researchers at Schering-Plough Healthcare Products have developed an insole to prevent foot pain in women who wear high-heels.

What the insole does is shift the woman’s weight back on the heel and off the front of the foot, which is where women have their foot pain.

Check out Dr. Scholl’s for Her High Heel Insole.

Interestingly, the researchers also found out that insoles can also provide pain relief for osteoarthritis in the back, hips and knees.

Sitting Up Straight Isn’t All That It’s “Cracked” Up To Be

sittingstraight Scottish researchers reported that sitting up straight is actually bad for your back (so much for all that nagging from your Mom to sit up straight). The researchers took MRI scans of 22 volunteers. They found that sitting upright at a 90-degree angle put enough pressure on the lower back to squeeze fluid from the disks that cushion the vertebrae.

So, what’s the best position? Slouching! Well, it’s slouching with a caveat: Your knees should to be three to four inches lower than your hips, and you need to recline slightly (instead of sitting at a 90-degree angle, lean back to a 135-degree angle) and voila, the pressure is off.

Validation Of Shiatsu – A Japanese Pressure Technique I Teach

http://www.teplitz.com/LowerBack.html

Prevention Magazine (October 2007) reported that pressure point massage (similar to Shiatsu) and acupuncture can relieve arthritis pain with none of the serious gastrointestinal side effects caused by NASAIDs. What the researchers discovered is that both the pressure point massage and acupuncture caused the nervous system to release chemicals that mask pain.

While I’ve know for years that the release of endorphins, which block pain signals, was one of the theories as to why Shiatsu works, I was pleased to see it confirmed in a research study. I now have a new Shiatsu treatment online that will get rid of lower back in minutes. If you’d like to learn more about that go to http://www.teplitz.com/LowerBack.html
