Bacteria In Your Gut Can Increase The Effectiveness Of Chemotherapy

Who would have thought that your gut bacteria can help your anti-cancer drugs fight your cancer? A study published in Immunity reported that the researchers found two bacteria in the human gut that activate immune cells which boosts the effectiveness of a commonly prescribed anticancer drug.

The researchers found that these two bacteria actually activated cancer-fighting T-cell immune responses. This enhanced the effects of the chemo drug cyclophosphamide when it was given to advanced lung and ovarian cancer patients. With 38 patients in the study, they found that the treatment lead to the patients being able to live with the cancer but that it didn’t worsen.

These results open up an entirely new area of research of using the bodies gut bacteria to heal.
