There’s a Problem with Dark Chocolate and It’s Not What You’d Think

I love enjoying a piece of Dark Chocolate most evenings after dinner.

I just found out there’s a problem in that most dark chocolate contains traces of cadmium and lead. The problem goes even further as reported in Consumer Reports that some dark chocolate products contain dangerous levels of cadmium and lead even in a serving as small as one ounce per day.

The difficulty with exposure to cadmium and lead is that long-term exposure can cause nervous system problems, high blood pressure, immune system suppression and kidney damage.

So, what’s a person to do?

Well, the recommendation is to limit your consumption of dark chocolate to a few servings a week.

Consumer Reports even had a list of safer products (notice the word is safer and not safe).

These are for the following products:

Mast Organic, Dark Chocolate 80% Cacao

Taza Chocolate Organic Deliciously Dark Chocolate 70%

Ghirandelli Intense Dark Chocolate 86% Cacao

Ghirandelli Intense Dark Chocolate Twilight Delight 72% Cacao

Cacao, and Valrhona Abinao Dark Chocolate 85% Cacao

So…I’m going to attempt to contact these companies to see if I can get a sample so I can report in a future Blurb on the taste issue which is so important in choosing a dark chocolate that you’ll like. I’ll let you know what I find out.
