Ask a child “Did you have fun at school today” and their answer may be more revealing about the student’s success at school. A company called Ecsell Institute has been researching this question.
What they found was that having fun was strongly connected to the overall student experience. If you’re an adult, think back to what about school stands out in your mind. Wasn’t it the classes and the times that were fun?
Well, Excell has also been looking at the work environment. They surveyed over 1,000 employees from many different industries asking them to rate their manager on numerous behaviors including whether the manager made work fun.
First of all, consider this - about 25% of the respondents don’t think their manager makes work fun. Just think of someone who has to go into the office, and they are looking forward to a not fun day. Imagine how time is going to feel like it’s dragging that day. Doesn’t that start to depress you just thinking about it.
On the other side of the equation, managers who make work fun are 4 times more likely to have team members who are happy in their jobs and the manager was 7 times more likely to be rated as a top manager by their team members.
The researchers also found three different ways managers can create more fun for their staff.
The first way is by the manager being positive, jovial and caring in their relationships with their team members. It boils down to building genuine and positive relationships with the team.
The second way was by showing team members that the manager values them through rewards and recognition.
The third way was by creating challenging opportunities for team members to develop their skills. Notice the word here is challenging and not just doing easy or mindless stuff.
The bottom line is when employees are enjoying their work, they also tend to be better at it and it can have a positive effect on the company’s bottom line.
So…let’s start having more fun at school and at work…what a unique concept.
