The question this week is how can you get people to stop smoking?
They used to have an ad campaign that displayed in the ad lungs diseased from smoking. It was kind of gruesome and mostly important, it didn’t work to change smoker’s behaviors.
So, what might work to get a longtime smoker to quit. Well, it turns out showing a picture of diseased lungs seems to work when it’s a picture of that smoker’s own lungs!
A study in PLOS Medicine involved more than 9,000 people. After showing them the picture of their lungs, the researchers observed that more of these people were stopping smoking, following a healthier diet, increasing their physical activity and increasing their oral hygiene.
The researchers found these differences when they compared these smokers seeing the pictures to a group of smokers that simply received verbal feedback about their personal health.
So…pretty pictures, anyone?
