What the Psychedelic Drug Psilocybin is Doing in the Brain

More and more research is coming out validating that psychedelic drugs like Psilocybin are powerful healers for the people taking them. They can help get rid of PTSD, depression, increase positive moods, and reduce the body’s response to negative stimuli.

The question though is why? What are they doing?

It seems a research team from Yale may have found the answer.

What they discovered is that a single dose of Psilocybin given to mice caused an increase in the density of dendritic spines, which are small protrusions on nerve cells that help information pass between neurons. These connections are actually impaired in people who are chronically depressed or stressed.

The researchers found that there was a 10% increase in these connections plus another 10% were larger than normal which suggested to the researchers that they were creating stronger connections. These connections were also visible within 24 hours of taking the drug and, most surprisingly, they were still there a month later.

In addition, the mice reaction to stress improved after they were given the drug. While many people who take the drug have mystical experiences, it’s good to know what’s actually going on in the brain.(Reported What Your Doctors Don’t Tell You, October 2021)
