Near Ft Myers, Florida there’s a town that has sprung up that’s fully electric. To me this is very exciting news as to the possibilities for tackling global warming.
You might not be aware that my first job out of law school was as an attorney with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency in the Division of Air Pollution Control. From that beginning, I’ve always maintained my interest in the environment. That’s why reading about the town of Babcock Ranch has me excited.
I want to make you aware of this town because if one developer can create this type of environment then more developers can do this, and I think there will be a greater and greater demand for this type of living.
The entire town is on 17,000 acres and was built with sustainability in mind. It’s the first town to be powered by 100% solar and every home is pre-wired for electric vehicle charging. The town also offers a gigabyte of broadband free to all residents.
All the building are certified Platinum "Florida Green" by the Florida Green Building Coalition. Going to Platinum is the highest standard for home construction.
Included in the design are parks, lakes, and 50 miles of trails so that half the town’s footprint is green which encourages an active, healthy lifestyle for its residents.
The developer even focused on developing an integrated water management system which sets a new standard for watershed protection, flood control and demand reduction. And as if all of that was not enough, native trees and plants provide magnificent views.
On the work front, the builders developed a spacious, comfortable, co-working space in town called The Hatchery. It is a collaborative working environment and supports a community dedicated to encouraging its members to find purpose, further develop their passions, and achieve their career goals. There is also regular office space available.
So, you might think living in this kind of environment would probably cost several arms and legs. It turns out even that’s not so. The developers have affordable homes starting at $200,000 as well as 2-bedroom apartments all the way up to water view mansions.
While this may sound like I’m pitching this development, I want you to think if this approach were used all over the country the impact it would have on our checking global warming.
