When you think of doing yoga, most people will think of just
the physical positions or postures. Yoga also encompasses breathing exercises
and meditation. It’s the impact of doing all three combined that is
scientifically proving that yoga provides you with great benefits.
I personally have been doing yoga, breathing and meditation
for almost 50 years, so I’ve seen and experienced the benefits of having
greater flexibility, strength and stamina.
Besides these kinds of benefits, the researchers have
confirmed many others using imaging technology. They’ve found yoga improves a person’s
attention span and their mental processing speed. It also lowers the person’s
stress level, reduces body image dissatisfaction and anxiety.
In examining the brains of yoga practitioners with the
imaging technology, the researchers also found that the yoga practitioners brains
have thicker cortexes, greater gray matter volume and increased density in
several regions of the brain, including the frontal, limbic, temporal,
occipital and cerebellar regions of the brain. Finally, doing yoga stops the
normal decline in total grey matter volume that occurs with age.
