Reducing Readmission Rates For Hospitals

When you have had a heart attack and you’ve been successfully treated at your local hospital, you’re not out of danger. One in five of these patients will be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of their heart attack. It turns out one of the contributing factors causing these readmissions is caused by confusion the patient winds up having over the discharge and recovery instructions they’re given. The patient can be overwhelmed when they are being discharge with all the things that they’re supposed to do and when they need to do it. There’s a now an app for this and it’s already being used by John Hopkins Medicine. The app is called the Corrie Health kit and the app works on Apple and Google cell phones.

The app is designed to hold the doctor’s instructions, track the patient’s meds and follow-up appointments. It sends the patient reminders about all of these. It also spells out the patient’s fitness and diet needs. The great news for the first cardiac patients using this app is that the readmission rate has dropped by 70%! So…if you’ve had a heart attack, even before you leave the hospital, ask if they use the Corrie Health kit since it’s your life that may be on the line.
