Statin drugs appear to have a darker side as they can negatively affect memory.
I’m writing about it this week because my Mother-in-Law, who has been a very active a vibrant 90 years old, recently had a very minor stroke. The doctors put her on the statin Lipitor and she’s now having problems with memory.
This prompted me to look further as one of the side effects of Lipitor is its negative effect on memory.
Since it tends to be more elderly people who are put on Lipitor, a doc’s reaction to memory issues may be dismissed as just a sign of aging or the doc won’t know why the memory is failing.
So, some researchers have figured out what’s actually going on. The researchers were looking at 1,040 different medications to see if these drugs would have a damaging effect on the body’s cells. To their surprise, they discovered a negative impact from 4 medications that caused a dramatic swelling in nerve cells, and it turned out that all 4 were statins. They were Lipitor, Mevacor, Crestor and Paravachol.
The swelling wound up making the cells look like beads on a string and it turned out that the swelling was interrupting the flow of information along the nerve cells. The swelling also stopped the nerve cells from continuing to growing branches.
When the patients stopped taking these statin drugs, these beads on a string bulges disappeared and the cells actually and quickly returned to normal growth!
Also, keep in mind that statins have a long list of potential side effects including muscle pain and weakness, liver damage, digestive problems and increased blood sugar levels (which is bad for diabetics).
You might want to talk to a nutrition-oriented or holistic physician about dietary and lifestyle changes that could reduce the need for statins plus there’s research that I’ve written about reporting that elderly folks actually live longer when they have a higher cholesterol level.
Finally, if you are taking statins, please make sure to take the supplement CoQ10 as these statins inhibit CoQ10’s functioning which is to create energy in the body’s cells.
So…as we saw in the Wizard of Oz…would you like one of these nice pills, my pretty?
