Drug Side-Effects Are Robbing The Body of Nutrients
You may not be aware that many prescription drugs affect the way our bodies absorb and use essential nutrients. Analyzing four categories of common drugs for correlations to the loss of nutrients reveals the following potential deficiencies and what supplement to take to avoid the deficiency:
-
Statins, which lower cholesterol, deplete Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) – Take 30 to 60 mg daily
-
Vasodilators for high blood pressure deplete Vitamin B6 – Take 2 mg daily
-
Beta-blockers for high blood pressure deplete CoQ10 – Take 30 to 60 mg daily
-
Diuretics for hypertension or congestive heart failure deplete magnesium, potassium and zinc – Take up to 400 mg of magnesium, 8 mg of zinc and 3,500 mg of potassium
-
Hormone therapies such as birth control pills deplete Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium, zinc – Take 2 mg B6, 75 mg of Vitamin C, 400 mcg of folic acid, 400 mg of magnesium and 8 mg of zinc.
If your doctor prescribes any of these drugs be sure to ask about the wisdom of taking these recommended supplements to offset the potential nutrient depletion from the drugs.

Kudzu May Actually Have A Purpose – Curbing Binge Drinking
A report in the Journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, found that the herb, kudzu, which grows abundantly in Southeastern states, may be effective as a means of reducing alcohol consumption.
Subjects in the study who regularly consumed 3 to 4 drinks per day were given either kudzu or a placebo for seven days. When they were subsequently given the opportunity to drink as much beer as they wanted, the subjects drank an average of 1.8 beers as compared to 3.5 beers for the controls.
The subjects both increased the time it took to consume their beer and decreased the amount taken with each sip. So…just think… this roadside weed may have a real use!

Taking Multiple Drugs Can Be Hazardous To Your Health
I recently read an article by Gary Graig on The Menacing Mathematics of Multiple Meds. He offered a fascinating discussion on the interactions of different medications. Very few drugs have been tested to see if there are negative side effects when you take them with other drugs. While the odds of negative side effects might be small when you take just one drug, the math changes as you increase the number of drugs a person is taking.
To test three drugs for adequate safety in the various combinations would require 7 separate tests. If you take 4 drugs, the combinations require 25 separate tests. Taking 5 drugs calls for 121 tests and 10 drugs would require 362,881 separate tests.
How many people are taking between 5 and 10 drugs a day and have no idea what the combination of these drugs will do? I personally remember when my father was in a nursing home taking multiple drugs each day. When they added another drug he started to develop dementia symptoms.
Since the symptoms didn’t show up immediately after he started to take it, it took a while for us to realize what was happening. My brother is the one who actually told the doctor to take him off the drug.
The result – his symptoms disappeared almost overnight.
So…if you know someone taking a lot of drugs, be very wary when other unexplained symptoms show up. It may be due to side effects.

If YOU'RE A WOMAN & YOU DRINK, THEN DO THIS
Nurses who had one drink a day had a 24% greater chance of getting breast cancer.
However, the nurses who also got 600 micrograms of folate per day cut their risk in half.
So if you're going to have a drink per day make sure you take a folate supplement.

Addictions Really Affect The Brain
There was an article published in July’s Time magazine about the impact of addiction on the brain. Researchers discovered that the brain of an addict, whether drugs or alcohol, has no activity in the front part of the brain where we plan, do abstract thinking and regulate our impulsive behaviors.
The parts of the brain that showed activity were related to having uncontrollable cravings. This means that addicts might be less adept at using the rationale mind to resist their addiction. The researchers found that it took about 90 days for the front part of the brain even to begin firing again, allowing the person to begin resisting their addiction.
This concept of a 90-day rehabilitation model goes along with what Alcoholics Anonymous recommends for a new member. It is also the duration of a typical stint at a drug treatment program. To me, this means the longer a person refrains from his or her addictions, the more the brain comes on-line to assist in being able to further resist the addictions.

Alternative Clinics Offer Holistic Ways To Beat Addiction
This was the headline of a story in Alternative Health magazine. The traditional medical and the 12-step program route to helping people heal their addictions have not been very successful. Between 70 to 85% of addicts that complete these programs relapse in 6 to 12 months. If this was a business, the business would be bankrupt very quickly. Until recently there haven’t been many other effective options available. Now there are.
Some alternative health clinics are boosting success rates in working with all kinds of addictions to as high as 85%! One of the ways that the holistic approach is different from the other approaches is in the realization that alcoholism and drug abuse can ravage the GI tract thereby limiting the ability of the body to absorb nutrients from foods. Therefore, these clinics are pumping nutrients into the patient’s body through IV and oral nutrient therapies. The clinics are also able to customize the nutrient formula based on which substance the patient is withdrawing from. Some might get nutrients that have a calming impact whereas others may get some that stimulate their brains.
One study had 15 newly sober patients in it. They all rated the severity of 15 “abstinence symptoms”, such as, cravings, anxiety, depression, etc., both before and after 6 days of IV and oral nutrition therapy. All 15 found abstinence symptoms were radically reduced which made it far easier for them to maintain their sobriety.
Alternative clinics are also very effectively using ear acupuncture to increase the success rate in the elimination of addictions. So...if you or someone you love has an addiction, don’t walk – run to the nearest clinic of this type.

WHAT CAN ALCOHOL DO?
A little wine may do more than we thought. New research seems to indicate that the key benefit may be coming from the ethanol. It can raise HDL cholesterol levels (which is the good kind). Now it may reduce complications for diabetics by improving the cells' ability to respond to insulin.
How about weight loss? The Nurses' Health Study found that non-drinkers were twice as likely to be obese as moderate drinkers were. This result may not apply to men.
How about Alzheimer's? An 18-year study found those who drank one alcoholic beverage per day were 40 percent less likely to have poor scores on tests of cognitive function. However, those having more than four drinks a day were 29% more likely to show mental deficits.
How about Osteoporosis? A study of 3,200 postmenopausal women found those who drank a drink a day kept three times more bone mass than non-drinkers.
So what does all this mean? A drink a day may be a very good idea for many reasons.
