There's an option to having surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome and it's the use of ultrasound. The British Medical Journal reported a study where 45 patients received 20 treatments over a 6-week period for carpal tunnel in both arms. One wrist was treated with ultrasound and the other with a fake treatment that appeared to be real.
The findings were that ultrasound treatments could provide short-term effectiveness and even achieve satisfying medium-term effects for patients with mild or moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. So...since ultrasound is safer, it's a better choice than surgery as a first option.
