Men Having A Heart Attack Are Better Off Being Married

A study looked at how being married affects man’s behavior when he is having a heart attack.
The researchers found that married men having a heart attack arrived at the Emergency Room 30 minutes sooner than single guys. Here’s the interesting part, the wives didn’t even have to be there when the symptoms occurred.
The study’s lead author suggested that “the husbands knew what their wives would say and didn’t want them to be angry if they delayed medical attention.” By the way, married women having a heart attack didn’t arrive at the hospital sooner than a single woman.
Now…for the single guy - to get yourself to the hospital sooner, you can picture what your mother would say. That should do it!

Eating Chocolate To Lower You Body Mass, Yum

Chocolate may lower your body mass index (BMI). Researchers from the University of California, San Diego published a report in the Archives of Internal Medicine followed the chocolate consumption of 970 men and women between the age of 20 and 85 who were from of heart disease, diabetes and abnormal cholesterol levels.
Even though chocolate consumption is linked to higher calories and increased intakes of saturated fat, the more frequent the chocolate consumption the lower the BMI. While this sounds counter intuitive, it appears that the chocolate increased mitochondrial and capillary function, muscular m=performance and lean muscle mass.
While the study didn’t measure the type of chocolate, there has been a ton of research validating the positive impact of dark chocolate. So…let’s do a toast with dark chocolate…lots of it!

A New Look At How We Build Muscle In Our Body

It used to be that the wisdom was for the body to build muscle, you needed to eat lots of protein and carbohydrates because carbs fuel your muscles. According to Ori Hofmekler, author of several nutritional books, the body can still build muscle even when it’s deprived of food.
You might be saying, “Huh, how can it do that?” It turns out that the amino acid leucine in your body can signal genes in your muscle to grow and build protein even during times of food deprivation so long as these amino acids are circulating in your blood stream. To get enough leucine, you need to be eating dairy products especially quality cheese and whey protein. The one draw back is that you’ll need to eat a lot of these leucine containing products to get the quantities of leucine to build muscle. The one exception is whey, which gives you be amount of leucine you need by eating 3 ounces per day.
Another study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise found that eating 20 grams of whey protein 30 minutes before resistance training boosts your body’s metabolism for as much as 24 hours after a workout! This means you’ll burn more calories even when you are doing the same things as someone else during that 24 hour period.
So…a little whey protein a day, keeps those muscles growing.

Can you Overdose on Water?

Can you overhydrate if you are an endurance athlete? The advice has been when you are an endurance athlete like a runner that you should drink ahead of thirst.
This advice is being challenged by Dr. Tim Noakes.
Dr. Noakes used to believe that drinking ahead of thirst was the correct approach.
However, since he accepted into this recommendation 30 years ago, he’s seen a dozen deaths that have occurred in endurance events due to drinking too much fluid. He’s written a book called Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports.
He’s actually found that over drinking can actually worsen an athlete’s performance. When you consume too much water, your cells will start to swell leading to gastrointestinal upset, dizziness and soreness. Drink way too much and your sodium can drop to dangerously low levels.
Dr. Noakes says to use our thirst mechanism to trigger when to take a drink of water since it’s a 300 million year old warning system for telling us when we need water.
Now, while there isn’t a lot of evidence for drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, it will probably not cause you any harm. But…if you’re an endurance athlete, use your thirst mechanism to tell you when your really need some water.

The Health Benefits Of Prayer

prayerhealthThere has now been hundreds and hundreds of studies validating the power of prayer. Here’s a summary of what a half a dozen of them have found:

1. People who prayer for the well-being of a close friend daily for four weeks were more willing to forgive the friend and even others verses people who just thought positive thoughts about their friend.

2. Prayer affects the regions of the brain that improve self-control allowing people who view their goals as sacred to put more effort and energy into attaining their goals.

3. Praying in an online support group helped breast cancer patients experience less stress, have lower levels of negative emotions and experience a greater sense of well-being.

4. People who undergo heart surgery who pray with a positive hopeful attitude experienced less depression and anxiety after the surgery. They also had fewer complications and shorter hospital stays.

5. People recovering from drug and/or alcohol abuse who were the most religious were 34% less likely to need readmission for further treatment.

6. Patients who had advanced cancer who had a religious belief in having a positive outlook dramatically improved the quality of their life.

So…get your own group together and start praying positively for yourself, for each other, and for others.

To Telecommute Or Not To Telecommute

telecommuteRecently Yahoo!’s CEO required employees to show up at the worksite every day. Well a study has been just published pointing out that that might not be the right decision.

Stapes Advantage just released its second telework survey and found that 93% of employers surveyed agreed that telework programs are mutually beneficial. In addition, 53% of business decision makers say telework leads to more productive employees.

From the workers standpoint, 48% of the remote workers say they are less stressed, 75% of business decision makers said they notice their teleworkers are happier and 37% reported less absenteeism.

While teleworking is not all positive and has some problems, overall, it seems a positive experience for companies and employees. So…just because Yahoo! is making a decision doesn’t mean it’s going to prove to be right.

Social Media Is Spreading Good News

goodnewsbad

As you know the media tends to focus in on bad news stories because bad news sells.

Researchers are discovering new trends for social media. By scanning people’s brains and tracking their emails and online post, the researchers have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.

It seems when you share a story with your friends and peers, you care about how they will react so you’ll share articles that are exciting, funny or emotions like anger or anxiety.

The more positive the article, the more likely it was to be shared. So…positive communication definitely has a place in our lives.

Drinking Soda Or Fruit Punch May Lead To A Higher Risk Of Depression

sodappressingA study presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology as well as the recent study at the National Institute of Health found that drinking sweetened beverages may increase a person’s risk of depression.

The researchers found that drinking four cans of soda daily can lead to a 30% higher rate of depression. Drinking four cans of fruit punch can lead to a 38% higher risk of depression.

The effect was more pronounced with diet fruit punch/soda as compared with non-diet versions.

These findings are based on beverage consumption and depression data from 263,925 adults aged 50 to 71.

The researchers followed the participants for 10 years and found that at the end of the study 11,311 people were diagnosed with depression.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that soda causes depression; depressed people may just be more likely to pop a can!

Still…put that soda and fruit punch down a drink some water!

More Benefits From Listening And Playing Music

musicbenefitsResearchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine found that emotions aroused by joyful music cause tissue in the inner lining of blood vessels to expand, increasing blood flow.

Other studies have shown that music can bring on sound sleep, boost mood and reduce anxiety.

Listening to music will also help surgery patients feel less pain and need less pain medication while they are recovering.

According to Nina Kraus, director of the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory, even after a few years of musical training, children have more powerful brainstem responses to complex sounds than peers who never had lessons. These neural changes are retained into adulthood.

Using this music concept in Los Angeles with at-risk youths who attend schools in gang-reduction zones, the kids take music lessons and participate in ensembles.

Rather than winding up in jail, these kids are staying in school and they are completing their education.

So…turn that music on and take music lessons and remember to save your hearing if you are using ear buds by limiting your listening time to an hour and then give yourself a break.

Getting Outside Into Nature Can Help You Heal

naturehealA study done for the National Recreation and Park Association found that spending time in nature speeds up healing in a variety of ways.

It cuts the time it takes to recover from surgery, improves the way the immune system works and helps diabetics achieve healthier blood glucose levels.

How long does it take to get these kinds of benefits? How about five minutes a day according to a study from the University of Essex, England!

Gun Control As A Health Issue

guncontrolWe need to redefine the gun control debate to an issue of health because of the death of over 30,000 Americans every year from the use of guns. 63% of the deaths were suicides and 36% were from homicides.

With the level of deaths from automobile accidents, we legislated seat belts, air bags and crush zones to be built into cars. With the level of deaths from smoking and second hand smoke, we legislated warning labels, raised the age for selling cigarette and added a tremendous amount of taxes onto the price of a pack of cigarettes.

So, why not use the legislation that President Obama is proposing to reduce the number of deaths by guns? And I’m not taking about taking away handguns and rifles that have a low magazine capacity.

There’s also an interesting Constitutional argument that I’d like to make for gun control. The leadership of the National Rifle Association wants a specific construction of the 2nd Amendment to allow for all guns to be available for purchase.

Now, if you look back to 1776 when the 2nd Amendment was included in the Constitution, people were using muskets, which took an expert 15 seconds to reload and their accuracy was very poor (This is why during the Revolution when the American and British soldiers were firing at each other they were only a very short distance apart).

So how about turning the clock back to what the Founding Fathers were dealing with when they enacted the 2nd Amendment and require modern assault weapons to have a 15 second timer on them before another round can be fired!

Getting Iron Into A Woman’s Diet Reduces Birth Problems–IRON FISH?

ironfishCambodia's women have a major problem with anemia, which has resulted in premature labor, hemorrhaging during birth, and poor brain development among their babies.

Chris Charles, a graduate student from the University of Guelph in Canada, figured out a brilliant way to work with the locals to increase the amount of iron in their diet without changing their eating habits.

Iron pots are expensive, so getting new cookware wasn't an option. Neither was asking them to buy iron-boosting pills. So Charles came up with an idea. He shaped iron blocks like a fish which are 3 to 4 inches long. The locals consider a fish to be lucky.

The person leaves the iron fish in a pot while water boils. This provides the villagers with 75 percent of their daily iron requirement.

Better still, the fishes are only $1.50 each and can last for up to three years. Since the fish was introduced, anemia levels have drastically declined and villagers have started feeling much healthier as a result.

Iron deficiency affects 3.5 billion people around the globe, proving that Charles's idea has world-changing potential.

Learn To Play A Piano with Technology Help

How would you like to learn how to play a piano while watching a TV show? Well, its looking like it can be done.
A computer scientist at Georgia Tech co-invented the Mobile Music Touch device. The person wears a fingerless glove that is connected via Bluetooth to a laptop or cell phone that plays a song.
The computer program converts the musical notes to vibrations and stimulates the fingers to move to hit the right keys in the right order.
Participants in the study were able to learn the first 45 notes of Amazing Grace in half an hour while studying. The students scored the same on their exam as the students who studied regularly.
The researcher even has used the device to help a people with spinal cord injuries that require repetitive motion therapy to regain movement. He wired up quadriplegics and found that the MMT boosted had sensation and agility.
The researcher thinks that MMT works because it stimulates nerves in the hand that causes the brain to devote more neurons to explaining the sensations.

Taking B-Vitamins May Help Reduce The Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease

bA study published in Public Library of Science One conducted by the University of Oxford found that a combination of folic acid, Vitamins B6 and B12 (which are all B-Vitamins) appears to slow brain atrophy in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment.

The study followed 168 participants over two years. One-half were treated with a European drug called TrioBe Plus® which contained a combination of folic acid (0.8 mg/d), and Vitamins B6 (20 mg/d) and B12 (o.5 mg/d). The other group received a placebo.

Those taking the vitamins had on average 29.6% less brain shrinkage. The vitamins also reduced homocysteine by 22.5%. Homocysteine was found in The Framingham Study to double a person’s risk of dementia if they had homocysteine levels above 14 micromoles per liter of serum.

By the way, this is an example of where a drug company is researching a combination of vitamins and if successful, then the drug company will patent the vitamin formula. The drug company will then be able to raise the price of the vitamins to drug price levels.

Fortunately, you can still get a B-Complex which will have all these ingredients. You can even buy them separately. So…if someone you know has dementia, get them taking these B-Vitamins.

Being Real Busy Can Be Healthy

toobusy2You’re busy, busy, busy. It turns out that you may be healthier than people who say they are often bored.

British researchers found that the bored people were more likely to die of a heart attack.

Boredom may be linked to skipping workouts and junk food, which can lead to depression and poor health.

So…if you’re going to be busy, busy, busy - make sure you eat healthy and leave time to exercise, too.
