When we talk about the brain, we usually focus on what we don’t want to happen. We don’t want to get Alzheimer’s disease or dementia or a brain tumor. We don’t usually talk about what can we do to increase our brain’s health.
Well, there are folks that are now focusing on that. One example is the Center for BrainHealth at the University of Texas at Dallas. They are doing a study on how we can increase our brain’s health.
In the study, they are looking at cognition as just one of the factors of a healthy brain. They are also looking at the concept of well-being, social interactions, and daily routines. All this gives the people in the study a score called the Brain-Health Index.
Each participant is then paired with a coach to help them improve their score by focusing on the person’s healthy habits. The coach might teach the person to do critical-thinking tasks at the times of the day when their brain is the sharpest.
Here’s the interesting part. The initial trial was 12-week. The participants had an 80% improvement in their scores, which is quite incredible.
The group is still looking for volunteers to take part in the study, especially women and minorities. To learn more about volunteering you can go to www.thebrainhealthproject.org.
