Your skin - it’s something we don’t pay much attention to until we get a cut, bruise or rash. When you stop and start learning and thinking about our skin, the word amazing is the right description.
For starters, our skin is the largest organ we have. It covers a surface area of 1.5 to 2 square meters. It weights between 7.5 and 22 pounds, and it makes up approximately one-seventh of our body’s weight.
Because of its exposed position, skin cells must be regenerated frequently. When you cut or injure your skin, skin cells divide and multiply to cover that lost skin.
This replacement process happens even if your skin isn’t damaged.
Now here’s the more amazing part. Every minute, you shed 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells. When you do the math on this, it means you shed about 50 million cells a day.
Just imagine asking someone who didn’t know this to give you one cent for every skin cell you shed that day. So, let’s see 50,000,000 x $.01 equals a lot of money!
One thing you can do to help your skin is use Evening Primrose oil. One study found that giving women 500 mg capsules of the oil a day for 12 weeks resulted in significantly improved water loss from inside the body to the outside, firmer skin and increased elasticity.
So…a salute to a somewhat ignored organ (until something goes wrong) that is really our space suit that keeps us alive on planet Earth.
