When someone hears the diagnosis of a brain tumor, especially a glioblastoma, it doesn’t leave one with a lot of hope as the survival rate is only around 15 to 20 months.
Well, there’s a new treatment approach and it’s very exciting.
It’s using an oscillating magnetic field-generating device (a fancy name for a magnet) to rapidly kill glioblastoma cells in culture and shrink human glioblastoma tumors implanted in mice which prolonged their survival.
The device was also used to shrink an end-stage recurrent glioblastoma in a patient who had no other treatment option.
It’s called an oncomagnetic device.
This device that the researchers invented is portable and wearable. It consists of a helmet and has strong permanent magnets attached to it that are in sealed cases and rapidly spun by high-speed electric motors. The rotation and timing are controlled by a programmable microcontroller operated by a rechargeable battery.
A treatment-specific pattern of rotation, frequencies and timings is then used to stimulate the brain to treat the glioblastoma.
The case report from the one patient demonstrated that a month-long course of treatment, which was done for two hours and up to three times a day on weekdays, reduced the volume of the patient’s end-stage recurrent glioblastoma by more than 30%.
The device is now being used in both research and clinical settings.
One key advantage of the new device (that I like a lot) is that it does not have any known serious side effects. Moreover, it does not involve drug treatments or shaving the patient’s head.
So, if you have a diagnosis of glioblastoma, then get yourself charged up with magnets!
