William W. Li has written a
book where he lists some foods that are really powerful at healing our body’s diseases
called How to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal
Itself. Li has been on the faculty of Harvard University, Tufts University
and Dartmouth Medical School.
So, here are the foods and
what they can do for you:
1. Purple Potatoes. Research on mice has shown it can
kill colon cancer stem cells and reduce the number of tumors in the body. The
researchers gave mice the equivalent of one purple potato a day. While these
mice were at high risk for colon cancer, they had 50% fewer tumors. The
research was done with the Purple Majesty variety of purple potatoes.
2. Sourdough Bread. Sourdough contains a probiotic called
Lactobacillus reuteri that has been shown in the lab to improve immunity,
suppress tumor development, slow weight gain, and speed up wound healing. It
even stimulates the brain to release the feel-good hormone called oxytocin.
3. Gouda Cheese. Gouda is high in Vitamin K-2. The researchers
found that eating about 1 to 3 ounces of hard cheeses each day dropped the risk
for lung cancer by an astounding 62%! As a bonus benefit, eating the equivalent
of 2 slices per day reduced the risk of prostate cancer by 35%.
4. Kiwifruit. Kiwifruit makes it easier for your gut bacteria
to grow healthy bacteria. It also helps prevent and repair damage to your DNA
that is caused by the environment and also reduces the risk of cancer.
5. Concord Grade Juice. Drinking 1 ½ cups of Concord grape
juice every day for 9 weeks increased the level of T-cells in the person’s body,
which are important for your immune system and for fighting cancer.
So…I think I’ll make a
sourdough bread sandwich with purple potatoes and gouda cheese as the stuffing.
I’ll have Kiwifruit for desert and wash it all down with a glass of concord grape
juice!
