Are You Aware of What’s on the Video Your Kids Are Watching on YouTube?

With all the craziness of the Pandemic, if you have kids, you may be using YouTube as a way to keep your kids occupied while you attempt to get all kinds of stuff done at home.

There may be a problem with that approach that you might not be aware of and it involves your child’s health.

Researchers at New York University decided to explore what’s on these videos that the kids are watching as it relates to the food and beverage promotions on these videos.

They viewed 418 videos from five popular kid YouTube shows and discovered that almost half of these videos had food and beverage promotions on them. And now for the bad news – over 90% of those promotions were for either unhealthy or fast food options.

It’s the old adage that a child is susceptible to - if they’ve seen it on TV/cell phone/video screens, it must be true.

How can you counteract this unwanted influence? First, you’ll need to watch with your kids as much as possible and you’ll need to talk with the child about what their favorite kid influencer is promoting and whether it fits into a healthy diet.

Next, you’ll need to explain to your child that the influencer is getting paid to say what they’re saying, and they might not even eat what they are promoting.

So…do you best to help your child make better food choices.
