Pain management is important. However, with the opioid crisis, people are becoming reluctant to take pain pills since addition can happen very quickly.
Well, there’s now what I will call a crazy option to reduce your level of pain.
This is about a study reported in eLIfe and it was done at Ludwig-Maximillians-Universitat and at University of Oxford.
While it involved only 20 volunteers, the results were impressive.
The researchers exposed the volunteers to painful levels of cold and they were asked to manage their pain in 3 ways:
1. Thinking of something beautiful or pleasant.
2. Persuading themselves that the feeling was not too bad.
3. Counting down from 1,000 by sevens.
So, which do you think lowered the level of pain intensity by 50%? I would have guessed it was #1.
This is the crazy part. If you said #3, counting down from 1,000 by sevens worked the best? The researchers thought the high level of concentration needed to do the countdown is what did it.
So, let’s see – 1,000…993…986…979… (This is not as easy as it seems). Give it a go yourself and see how you do. If you do have pain, let me know if it helps reduce the level of pain you are experiencing!(Reported, BottomLine Personal, January 1, 2021)
